Orange County College Basketball : Chapman’s on a Roll, Upsets UC Riverside

Freshman forward Dave Roth scored a career-high 27 points Friday night as Chapman College upset first-place UC Riverside, 82-75, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at Riverside.

Roth made 9 of 13 field goals, and 8 of 10 free throws, including four in the last 37 seconds.

Chapman (4-2, 10-8) is in second place in the CCAA.

Riverside (5-1, 15-4) led 6-0 before Roth scored the Panthers’ first basket with 3:27 played. The Highlanders led 37-35 at halftime, but Roth hit a 10-footer 37 seconds into the second half to tie it, 37-37. Robert Jimerson’s three-pointer with 18:30 left gave Chapman the lead for good.

Riverside closed to 68-65 when Mission Labasan made a free throw with 4:23 to play. Chapman then rebounded when he missed another free throw and Roth scored. Jon Samuelson’s two free throws put Chapman ahead by seven.

Junior Kelly Huston scored 16 points for Chapman, and Samuelson had 12. Paul Kapturkiewic led Riverside with 19 points and Julis Thomas had 18. Jimerson, who was averaging 23.8 points per game in the CCAA, was held to 11. He fouled out with a minute left.

The Panthers play Cal Poly Pomona at 5:45 p.m. tonight.

In women’s action:

Hawaii 63, UC Irvine 48--Judy Mosly scored 16 points to lead the Rainbows (6-3, 14-4) past the Anteaters (5-3, 9-9) in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Hawaii. Zalina Walton of Irvine led all scorers with 18.

Chapman 74, UC Riverside 63--Valarie Hartsfield scored 24 points to lead the Panthers to the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory. Tina Cavalin had career-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds, including 15 points in the second half. Toni Carter and Alonda Varisco scored 14 each for the Highlanders.

Chapman is 4-1 in the CCAA, 11-8 overall.

UC San Diego 71, Christ College of Irvine 48--Beth Copeland scored 16 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field to lead UCSD (13-8) to a nonconference victory at Irvine. Jill Koster added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Tritons.

Pacific Christian 67, Mills 54--Junior center Kris Fish scored 26 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Pacific Christian to a nonconference victory at Oakland. Jenny Fish added 14 points and Amy Fornasier added 13 for PCC (5-8).
