ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Century League : Santa Ana Beats Canyon

After defeating Canyon High School, 73-48, Wednesday night, Santa Ana looked ready for its Century League showdown against Foothill Friday night.

Santa Ana (6-1, 17-6), ranked No. 8 in the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. poll, had no trouble against the Comanches (4-3, 10-9), who committed six first-quarter turnovers that resulted in Saint baskets.

The Saints are tied for first with Foothill (6-1, 14-9), which defeated Santa Ana Valley Wednesday.

Forward Bobby Joyce had a game-high 20 points and 14 rebounds and teammate Jeff Stewart added 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace Santa Ana.

Midway in the second quarter Santa Ana outscored Canyon, 13-0, to build a 33-14 lead. Santa Ana led at halftime, 39-16.

Santa Ana, which has five straight victories, outrebounded Canyon, 54-30.

Foothill 74, Santa Ana Valley 64--Foothill outscored Santa Ana Valley, 20-4, in the first quarter and never allowed the Falcons to get closer than 10. Greg Rieber scored 21 points and Doug Kopcha added 19 for the Knights, who are 6-1 in league play. Steve Calhoun led the Falcons with 21. Santa Ana Valley is 2-5 in league.

Villa Park 64, El Modena 58--Villa Park used a 12-2 spurt early in the fourth quarter, winning at home. Mike Tucker led Villa Park (1-6, 5-14) with 17 points and Steve Waldrip added 15.John Degree led El Modena with 22. El Modena is 2-5 in league play.
