Center Adam Keefe scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Woodbridge High School to an 81-64 victory over Central in a Southern Section 2-A first-round game at Woodbridge.
The third-seeded Warriors (21-5) jumped to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. The Pacific Coast League champions held a 30-10 lead after the first quarter.
“We talked about the importance of good defense and coming out with lots of intensity tonight,” said Woodbridge Coach Bill Shannon. “Our four-hour drive to El Centro the other night really paid off for us.”
Shannon and assistant John Halagan made the trip to scout Central against Bloomington. Shannon had hoped that his strategy would get the Spartans’ leading scorer, Thomas Bigsby, in foul trouble. Bigsby picked up three quick fouls and finished with six points.
“We told our kids when he had the ball they should take some charges,” Shannon said. “He got in foul trouble early and seemed to be real frustrated.”
Vince Bryan added 18 points and David Townsend added 12 for Woodbridge.
Edgewood 64, Trabuco Hills 62--Edgewood outscored the Mustangs in the second quarter, 27-17, to take a 36-30 halftime lead. John Moses had 9 of his 18 points in the quarter.
