Southern Section Soccer Playoffs : Fountain Valley Girls Defeat Mira Costa, 3-2

Senior Wendy Kojima tied the score at 2-2 late in regulation and then scored the winning goal in the first 10-minute overtime period as Fountain Valley defeated Mira Costa, 3-2, Friday in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A girls’ soccer playoffs at Fountain Valley.

Neither team scored in the second overtime.

Mira Costa had taken a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the half on a goal by Karen Griener. She scored 10 minutes into the second half to put the Mustangs ahead, 2-0.

But Sophomore Deena Havuer scored the first Fountain Valley goal three minutes later and Kojima followed with the game-tying and winning goals.

Fountain Valley will play No. 3 Upland, which defeated El Toro, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round Wednesday.

In other 4-A first-round play:

Mission Viejo 3, Alta Loma 1--The No. 1 Diablos (24-0-1) advanced to the quarterfinals and will play West Torrance Wednesday with the victory at home. Keri Kennedy scored twice and Erin Dunteman added another for Mission Viejo.

Edison 3, Beverly Hills 0--Amy Lund, Debbie Bontrager and Mendy Fontes scored for the Chargers (18-3-4), who are seeded fourth at Edison. Goalie Jill Warden had one save for Edison, which will play University.

Capistrano Valley 2, Newport Harbor 0--The Cougers play Torrance, which defeated Huntington Beach, 3-0, Wednesday.

In boys’ 2-A play:

Brea-Olinda 1, La Mirada 0--Robbie Hillard, who didn’t play in the first half, scored four minutes into second half for the Wildcats (15-4-3). Mike Ozminski got the assist. Brian Hester had four saves as he got his seventh shutout of the season and third in a row.

Brea-Olinda plays Cajon in the second round Tuesday.

In boys’ 1-A play:

Orange Lutheran 1, Elsinore 0--Scott Ruyan scored with 10 minutes left in the first half to lead the Lancers (17-3-3) to the first-round victory.
