Cabrillo forward Gary Lown took advantage of a weakened Moorpark defense and scored all of his team’s goals in a 3-0 soccer win Friday in a Southern Section 1-A Division playoff game.
Four Moorpark starters had been declared academically ineligible two weeks ago and another starter, Hein Ho, had been sidelined because of a knee injury at gametime.
Lown’s goals came at 34 minutes, 45 minutes and 54 minutes. Wing Danny McGahey assisted on Lown’s first and third goals and Alvin Grimes assisted on the second. Cabrillo outshot Moorpark (12-7-1), 28-14.
Cabrillo Coach Rick Schmidt was aware Moorpark’s defense was not at full strength. “In the first half, they kept us from getting a clear shot,” he said. “In the second half, it kind of broke down.”
Cabrillo (9-7-1) plays Agoura on Tuesday. Agoura has won the Southern Section championship the past two years and is seeded No. 1 in the playoffs this year.
