NIT Roundup : Washington Advances in Overtime

Senior guard Greg Hill scored 11 of his 26 points in overtime to lead Washington to a 98-90 victory over Montana State at Bozeman, Mont., Wednesday night in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Seven-foot senior center Chris Welp’s 15-foot jumper with four seconds remaining in regulation time tied the game at 80-80. Montana State fired an errant desperation shot at the buzzer.

Then Hill took over, hitting a three-point shot with 12 seconds gone in the overtime and adding a 17-footer just 43 seconds later.

A layup by Welp, who finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds, gave Washington an 87-80 lead. Montana State (21-8) never got closer than four points the remainder of the overtime.

The Huskies (19-14), runner-up to UCLA in the Pac-10 tournament, made 7 of 8 free throws in the last 90 seconds--including 6 of 6 by Hill.

Nebraska 78, Marquette 76--Senior guard Brian Carr hit a 10-foot jumper with one second left to give the Huskers the victory at Lincoln, Neb.

Carr’s heroics came after Marquette’s Kevin Johnson and Tony Smith each made three-point field goals in the final 53 seconds to tie the game.

Carr drove in from the right side and was fouled as he made the game-winning shot. Carr then intentionally missed his free throw.

Bernard Day scored 18 points without missing a shot for Nebraska (18-11). Marquette finished with a 16-13 record.

Boise State 62, Utah 61--Reserve guard Mike Sanor’s rebound basket with 25 seconds left gave Boise State the win at Boise, Ida.

With one second left, Utah’s Albert Springs missed two free throws, and Boise State’s Greg Dodd grabbed the rebound.

Boise State is 22-7; Utah finished at 17-13.
