Viewpoint No Match for Simi Lutheran, 62-1 : SOFTBALL

Simi Valley Lutheran batters walked 49 times, drove in 48 runs and had 12 hits in a staggering 62-1, three-inning victory over Viewpoint on Thursday in a Heritage League game at Chatsworth Park.

“I’ve never been involved in anything like it before,” Simi Lutheran Coach Warren Bottino said. “I put in all the reserves in the first inning and they played the whole game. Girls who hadn’t caught a ball in a year were catching screaming liners. It was just that kind of game.”

Simi Lutheran (14-5, 9-0) scored 39 runs in the first, 5 in the second and 18 in the third. In the first, Simi Lutheran’s Yukako Ogoshi was 2 for 2 with 8 runs batted in and a grand slam--the game’s only extra-base hit. Teammate Donna Schultz was 2 for 3, scored 7 runs and had 7 RBIs.

Schultz also pitched a one-hitter. Silvia Andres was the only batter to strike out for Simi Lutheran, which also had 17 stolen bases. Viewpoint (3-3) committed three errors.

FOOTHILL LEAGUE

Christy Alves threw her second no-hitter of the season, striking out 17 for Burroughs in a 7-0 victory over San Gabriel. Senior Jacqie Delange was 2 for 3 with an RBI for Burroughs (16-2, 5-1). . . . Debbie Day was 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs for Burbank in a 13-2 rout of Schurr in a game at Schurr. Teammate Kristi Helsley was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Burbank (18-2, 5-1) scored 11 runs in the third inning on six hits and five errors. Schurr fell to 2-4.

MARMONTE LEAGUE

Catcher Julie Chellevold hit for the cycle and drove in seven runs as Thousand Oaks (16-6, 7-2) scored a 16-0 win over Westlake (4-6 in league). Chellevold, who started off a nine-run first inning with a first-pitch home run, also tripled home three runs in the same inning. She also doubled home two runs in a four-run second inning. Molly Moore, who allowed five hits, picked up her sixth win.

EAST VALLEY LEAGUE

Senior right-hander Laura Fawcett pitched a no-hitter and struck out 16 to lead Verdugo Hills to an 11-0 win over North Hollywood (3-3). Verdugo Hills is 11-0, 6-0 in league.

GOLDEN LEAGUE

Cathy Lewis struck out 10 batters and allowed two hits as Saugus (10-7, 8-3) defeated Burroughs of Ridgecrest, 4-0, at Saugus. Lewis, who recorded her eighth win and fourth shutout of the season, was helped by Lori White’s two-run double.

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE

Wendy Wootton singled in Stacy Tilton in the second inning to give Oak Park a 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure. Wootton, Lisa Obedencio and Hedi Ogawa each had two hits for Oak Park (8-6, 4-6). St. Bonaventure (6-3 in league) had the bases loaded in third with one out but could not score as Tilton got two St. Bonaventure batters to ground out.

Sherri Cisco and Samantha Bennett each was 2 for 3 to lead La Reina over Moorpark, 9-3. Moorpark (7-10, 4-7) was led by Susan Steele (2 for 3 with 2 RBIs) and Denise Duarte (2 for 4).

ALPHA LEAGUE

Pitcher Michelle Vail capped off a seven-run fourth inning with a two-run triple as she led Village Christian (11-4, 5-3) to a 7-0 win over L.A. Lutheran. Vail, who also scored in the inning, allowed two hits and struck out 11 for her 11th win of the season.
