Orange County Community College Roundup : OCC Swimmers Take First-Day Lead

Janet Popp, Tina Constable, Jeanette Young and Mathew Harris set school records Thursday to give Orange Coast College the lead on the first day of the men’s and women’s community college state swimming championships at Merced.

Popp, a freshman, won the women’s 100-yard individual medley in 1 minute 0.72 seconds. Constable won the women’s 50-yard freestyle in 24.40.

Young, the defending state champion in the one-meter springboard, received a score of 414.50 points to win. Harris took third in the men’s 500-yard freestyle with a 4:40.48 clocking.

The Pirate women, trying for their fourth straight state title, lead the meet with 123 points. West Valley is in second (89), followed by Diablo Valley (88), Saddleback (58) and Golden West (56).

In the men’s competition, Orange Coast leads with 123 points, followed by Santa Monica (112) and Diablo Valley (106).

In a nonconference softball game:

Cypress 1, San Diego Mesa 0--Pricilla Villagomez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to give the Chargers (8-9, 18-19) the victory at Cypress. Sue Boxley went 2 for 4 for Cypress. Jennifer Garcia shut out San Diego Mesa through the first five innings, and reliever Noel Parker (16-15) did not allow a hit in the final two innings for the win.
