San Diego High School Baseball : Christian Squeezes by St. Augustine for 3-2 Win

Chris Waymire squeezed in Craig Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as host Christian High School beat St. Augustine, 3-2, Wednesday to take over first place in the City Central League.

St. Augustine (4-6, 6-12) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run by Nathan Thernes. It increased its lead to 2-0 with a run in the fourth. Christian (7-3, 13-6) tied the score in the sixth on a single by Waymire an RBI double by winning pitcher Matt Brouillette (2-0). Brian Weeks, running for Brouillette, took third on a passed ball. After David Jeremiah walked, Weeks was able to score the tying run on a delayed steal.

Elsewhere in the City Central League, host Lincoln (4-5-1, 10-7-1) won, 6-5, over San Diego (6-3. 14-6-1) to give Christian sole possession of first place.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Mira Mesa 10, Serra 4--Mira Mesa took advantage of six Serra errors in scoring five unearned runs at Mira Mesa. Ed Salanga was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI to lead Mira Mesa (5-5, 11-9) and Angelo Carrero was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Eric Esty pitched four innings for the victory. Patrick Henry 4, Point Loma 3--Chuck Kelly was 3 for 3 and singled in the game-winning RBI for host Patrick Henry (7-3, 12-5-1). Cory Powell also drove in two runs with a double for Patrick Henry. David Schiff pitched a complete game, allowing three hits, to get the win.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Clairemont 8, La Jolla 5--Andy Williams hit a grand slam with no out in the eighth inning at Clairemont. Williams (4-0) who pitched the first three innings and the final out in the eighth was the winner for Clairemont (8-2, 11-8-1) which took over sole possession of first place. Mike Giordano and Ricky Doane were each 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Mission Bay 3, University of San Diego High 2--Scott Vonderlieth singled home Tony Lennan with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for host Mission Bay (7-3, 14-6). Rick Hurley (6-2) pitched the last 2 innings for the win. Tom Stilinovich (5-4) was the loser for USDHS (7-3, 15-5).

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Granite Hills 16, El Cajon 7--In addition to being the winning pitcher, George Bishop drove in three runs with a single, a double and a triple as Granite Hills (9-1, 17-3) continued its dominance of the league, scoring nine runs in the first inning off three El Cajon pitchers. El Cajon is 2-8, 3-12.

Santana 7, El Capitan 6--Scott Oliver hit a grand slam and Tim Barry pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to lead host Santana to a 7-6 victory. Oliver’s homer gave Santana a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but El Capitan rallied to tie the score in the fourth. Santana (7-3, 13-6) broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth, on two singles, a sacrifice fly by Raul Padilla and a single by Barry O’Gorman.

Mount Miguel 6, Grossmont 4--Jesus Alvarez drove in a run with a double to key a four-run fourth inning for visiting Mount Miguel (4-6, 9-6). Doug Davis hit a two-run home run for Grossmont (6-4, 15-5).

Valhalla 13, Monte Vista 8--Eric Yetta hit a solo home run and scored three runs to lead visiting Valhalla (6-4, 8-8). Dennis Nichols drove in two runs with a single and double for Monte Vista (0-10, 3-12).
