SPORTS SHORTS : REACTION TO COACHING CHANGE

Linda Hagen, Leffingwell Christian High School--The athletic director at the private Norwalk school responded to an item in Sports Shorts last week that announced that baseball coach Larry Randall had not been rehired. Hagen says that Paul Kosareff--who coached the team in 1986--will be returning as basball coach in 1988. Kosareff left after one year at the school because he was not offered a teaching position, she said. He will return as a part-time coach again.

YOUTH SOCCER CHAMPS

United Giants--The Cerritos boys’ soccer team won its third consecutive state title recently. It was the fifth championship in the past nine years for the team. The state cup is as far as a boys’ team can go in the under 15-years-old category. The team is coached by Julio Cordoba and Pete Sepulveda.

PREP BASKETBALL SIGNINGS

Christine Carroll, California High School--The 6-foot-3 center, who gained All-Whitmont League basketball honors, has decided to continue her career at Chapman College.

Desi Hazely, Ocean View High School--The Lynwood resident has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The 6-foot-5 forward was All-Sunset League for the Huntington Beach school.

OVER-THE-LINE SOFTBALL

Southern California Softball--The organization plans another series of adult over-the-line softball and 3-on-3 baseball tournaments. The series begins Saturday with the Open Grass Over-the-Line Tournament at Cerritos High School.

SENIOR SOFTBALL

Norwalk--The city is seeking players for a softball team for persons age 55 or older. Potential participants may call the Norwalk Community Information Office at 929-2677.

STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONS

Cerritos College--The Falcon baseball team has won two of the past three state community college baseball titles and has won eight state titles overall. Cerritos finished 47-5 this season after beating Sacramento City College for the 1987 championship. The Falcons also won the state title in 1985.

William Spruston, Warren High School--In speaking before a CIF Southern Section appeals committee last week, the principal suggested how the CIF might have avoided the releaguing problems that now plague the 21 high schools in the Southeast area (called by the CIF the San Gabriel Valley division): “Back in the fall (of 1986) I suggested to commissioner (Stan) Thomas and to the CIF that perhaps something needed to be done with the San Gabriel Valley area. One of the things we could perhaps have looked at was to dissolve that area. Had this problem been addressed in previous years we probably wouldn’t be in this mess.”
