Esperanza High School shortstop Tom Redington and Ocean View outfielder David Holdridge are among the players selected for the 20th Orange County All-Star baseball game scheduled for June 16 in Anaheim’s Glover Stadium.

Redington, who has hit 20 career home runs, heads the list of selections for the North team. Redington ranks third on the Southern Section’s career home run list. The North will be coached by Mike Curran of Esperanza.

Holdridge, the top slugger in the county during the regular season, heads the South team. Holdridge hit nine homers and drove in 36 runs. Dave Demarest of La Quinta will coach the South team.

Two Cal State Fullerton assistant coaches have submitted their resignations.

Breck Greenwood is leaving the women’s gymnastics team after nine years as an aide to Lynn Rogers. During his tenure, the Titans won one national championship and placed in the top five in the finals seven of the other eight years. He is a 1976 Cal State Fullerton graduate and former football player with no future coaching plans.

Kathy Van Wyk is leaving the women’s softball team after five years as an aide to Judi Garman. During her tenure, the Titans went to the College Softball World Series four times and won the 1986 national title. Van Wyk is a 1983 Fullerton graduate. She played only one season (1982) for the Titans. With a 35-1 record, she won All-American honors and the Broderick Award as the nation’s finest collegiate softball player. She also has no future coaching plans.

Around the Area The 14th annual Irvine sports awards banquet, honoring the top scholar athletes from Irvine, University and Woodbridge high schools and UC Irvine and Christ College Irvine, will be held tonight at the Bren Center on the campus of UC Irvine starting at 7 p.m. UC Irvine men’s basketball coach Bill Mulligan will be the featured speaker, and the cost, which includes a dinner, is $25 for adults and $15 for students at the door.

Former California Angel Ron Jackson will hold a youth baseball clinic Saturday at Villa Park High School from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Joining Jackson will be current Angel catcher Butch Wynegar, former Angel pitcher John Verhoeven, hitting coach Al Tetreault and Olympian Greg Foster. Registration and a picture session will begin at 10:30, with the clinic scheduled to begin at noon. A fee of $25 will benefit Athletes in Need, a nonprofit group headed by Jackson that is dedicated to serving the vital needs of former professional athletes.

The third annual Gene Murphy ‘FUN-raiser’ golf tournament will be held next Thursday at the Fullerton Municipal Golf Course. The best-ball format begins at 11 a.m. The $40 entry fee includes green fees, cart, steak dinner, T-shirt and door prizes. Murphy’s entire Cal State Fullerton football coaching staff will play in this end-of-the-year event. The field is limited to 80 golfers.

The City of Laguna Beach Recreation Department will hold its 12th annual three-on-three basketball tournament the weekends of June 6-7 and 13-14. Entry fee for each four-man team is $28. For more information call 497-3311, ext. 203.
