El Dorado’s Boone Leads South Stars to a 6-0 Victory Over North in Opener

Bret Boone, the son of California Angel catcher Bob Boone, had two hits and drove in two runs Friday night as the South All-Stars defeated the North, 6-0, in the first game of the California High School All-Star series at San Diego State’s Smith Field.

Boone, of Placentia El Dorado High, singled to start a two-run South rally in the first inning and doubled in a run in the second. Boone walked with the bases loaded in the third inning to give the South a 5-0 lead.

Lance Dickson, a left-hander from La Mesa Grossmont , struck out 12 in six innings in earning the victory. Dickson allowed just two hits and also picked two runners off first base.

The South took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single by first baseman Manny Cervantes of Whittier La Serna.

After Boone doubled in a run to make it 3-0, the South added two more runs in the third inning. Eric Helfand of San Diego Patrick Henry singled in one run and then Boone walked with the bases loaded to force in another. The final South run came in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Tom Redington of Anaheim Esperanza.

The South leads the overall series, which started in 1969, 20-16. Game 2 will be played at 7:30 tonight at San Diego State, with Game 3 scheduled for noon Sunday at the University of San Diego.
