All-San Diego Section Baseball Team : Granite Hills Leads Selections; Plantier Is Player of the Year

Granite Hills High School, which was ranked No. 1 in the county most of the season, led all schools with four players selected to the All-San Diego Section first and second baseball teams.

Poway infielder Phil Plantier, who signed with the Boston Red Sox Thursday, was named the Player of the Year after he hit .585 for the Titans. Plantier was a second-team selection last season.

Granite Hills outfielder Donnie Carroll and catcher Jason DeGroote were named to the first team, and pitcher Mike Raskind and infielder George Bishop were named to the second. Granite Hills, which tied Grossmont for the Grossmont League title, was upset by Fallbrook in the 3-A quarterfinals.

Grossmont placed three players on the teams: pitcher Lance Dickson and infielder Doug Davis on the first team, and infielder Rick Twyman on the second.

Mount Carmel, the 3-A champion, had two players named to the first team: pitcher Tom Cheek and junior outfielder Ron Kelly.

Fallbrook outfielder Bill Dunckel, the only non-senior selected to last season’s first team, was selected to the second team this season. Santana utility man Bill Reed, who was selected to the second team last season, was a first-team pick this year.

Outfielder Keith Mitchell (Lincoln) and utility man Sean Rees (Mission Bay) repeated as second-team selections.
