Tim Williams, star outfielder-pitcher for St. Bernard High School, was named the CIF-Southern Section 1-A player of the year by the First Interstate Bank-Amateur Athletic Foundation board of sportswriters.

Williams, also an All-CIF selection last year, led St. Bernard to the 1-A championship game this year, where the Vikings lost to Whittier Christian. He batted .508 with 36 runs batted in, 13 home runs and 20 stolen bases and had a 9-2 pitching record with a 1.40 earned run average.

Outfielder Steve Solomon and pitcher Mike LeBuffe, who starred for Crossroad School’s Small Schools (Large Divison) championship team, were named to the First Interstate All-CIF team for that division.

Solomon, also an All-CIF selection last year, hit .382 for the Roadrunners and pitched effectively during the playoffs. LeBuffe had a 9-2 record with a 3.30 ERA and won a four-hit, 4-0 decision over Tehachapi in the CIF final.

Evans Butler shot 39 for nine holes to win the A Flight at the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s Bill Friedman Classic, held at Harbor Park Golf Course. Other flight winners and their gross scores were Wes Meyers, a 41 in B; Carl Armstrong, a 55 in C, and June Carpenter, a 53 among guests.
