Several of the best recently graduated high school football players in California, led by quarterbacks Jim Bonds of Newhall Hart and Ken Sollom of Canyon Country Canyon, will meet in the eighth annual Daily News all-star game tonight at 7:30 at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

The combination of Bonds, the Northwestern Conference’s Player of the Year, and Sollom, the Coastal co-MVP, on the same team gives East Co-coaches Rick Scott of Hart and Fred Grimes of North Hollywood a potential passing attack that would make any coach envious. The East will also have a couple of solid receivers in Chad Zeigler of Canyon and Chris Hite of Hart, and the state’s best kicker in Dominic Sandifer of North Hollywood Harvard.

The West team, coached by Reseda’s Joel Schaeffer and Encino Crespi assistant Jim Benkert, features a strong running game with Albert Fann of Reseda Cleveland, Khalid Ali of Granada Hill, Edwin Jones of Granada Hills Kennedy and Jeff Kellogg of Crespi, and five other members from Southern Section Big Five champion Crespi, including All-State tight end John Carpenter. Two other Kennedy standouts, defensive back Dion Lambert and center Ron Simmons, will also play.

Seventy-one players from the San Fernando, Simi, Santa Clarita, Conejo and Antelope valleys and Burbank, Glendale and the Foothill region have been selected to play. The San Diego Freeway is the dividing line for the teams.
