5th Assistant Quits Post at Cal Lutheran

Another Cal Lutheran assistant football coach has resigned, bringing to five the number of coaches that have left the school in the past month, but two replacements may be added as early as today, Kingsmen Coach Bob Shoup said.

Rich Watkins, who coached receivers and kickers at CLU for the past two seasons, accepted a position Friday to coach defensive backs at Palomar College in San Diego. Watkins, who grew up in San Diego, played at the junior college in 1981-82.

Moving to replace the majority of his coaching staff, Shoup has tendered a contract to Dan McGinnis, the freshman coach and defensive backfield coach at UC Davis last season. Shoup has also offered a position to former Cal Lutheran All-American Steve Hagen.

McGinnis, who played at UC Davis, would become defensive backfield coach. His decision is expected today.

“I believe Dan is anxious to sign it,” Shoup said of the contract. “He’s busy right now working on the defensive play book.”

Hagen, who earned national honors as a wide receiver at CLU, would become receivers coach if he accepts Shoup’s offer. Hagen is also considering an offer from the University of Pittsburgh.

Three CLU assistants--Jim Bauer, Gene Uebelhardt and Pete Alamar--resigned last month after a fourth, Donnie Reyes, was fired by head Coach Bob Shoup. Alamar has accepted a position to coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Bauer will coach linebackers at Moorpark College. Uebelhardt and Reyes both have indicated they will not coach football this season.
