Del Mar Derby Attracts Field of Nine Sunday
Nine horses, headed by Stately Don and Something Lucky, were entered Friday in the $166,200 Del Mar Derby Sunday.
Stately Don, to be ridden by Jacinto Vasquez, and Something Lucky, to be ridden by Laffit Pincay, were both assigned 120 pounds for the 43rd running of the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds on the turf course.
Others entered were Deputy Governor, who will be ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye and was assigned 119 pounds; The Medic, Chris McCarron, 118 pounds; Blanco, Fernando Toro, 118 pounds; Hot And Smoggy, Patrick Valenzuela, 115 pounds; Wilderness Bound, Luis Ortega, 114 pounds; Quietly Bold, Bill Shoemaker, 114 pounds, and Sebrof, Gary Stevens, 113 pounds.
A field of 10, headed by Zany Tactics, will race in today’s $50,000-added Pat O’Brien Handicap.
Zany Tactics, the world record-holder for six furlongs, will be ridden by Jack Kaenel and was assigned high weight of 123 pounds for the seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up.
Among those expected to challenge Zany Tactics are Bolder Than Bold, who will be ridden by Gary Baze, and Carload, who will be ridden by Ray Sibille.
