Giants Get Reuschel From Pirates for Stretch

The San Francisco Giants, engaged in a tight race with the Houston Astros and the Cincinnati Reds in the National League West, obtained right-hander Rick Reuschel Friday in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Sent to the Pirates in exchange for Reuschel were relief pitchers Jeff Robinson and Scott Medwin, a minor leaguer.

Reuschel, 38, is 8-6 and leads the National League with nine complete games. Named to the All-Star team last month in his 15th season, Reuschel’s earned-run average of 2.75 ranks second in the league. He is also tied for the league lead with three shutouts.

“We were reluctant to give up the young talent, but we felt we needed pitching in order to win this year,” Giant General Manager Al Rosen said. “Pitching is one of our minor league system’s strengths.”

A Giant spokesman said that Reuschel, who had been scheduled to start today for the Pirates, will join the Giants Sunday and make his first start Monday night at Philadelphia.
