Afleet, Canadian owned and bred, beat Stacked Pack by 3 lengths to win the $179,400 Jerome Handicap for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park. Afleet went a mile in 1:33 4-5.
Leo Castelli, the favorite in the field of nine, rallied in the late stages to finish fourth. However, Leo Castelli pulled up and was removed from the track in a horse ambulance.
Afleet’s victory was his fifth in seven career starts, four coming in Canadian stakes company. The colt, who carried 115 pounds including Gary Stahlbaum, earned $107,640 for owner-breeder Richard R. Kennedy and returned $7.20, $5.20 and $4.60 as the second choice. Stacked Pack paid $14.60 and $9 and Templar Hill paid $4.80 to show.
