Mater Dei at Oceanside--Last week, the Pirates (0-1) faced one of the best running backs in San Diego County, Vista’s Marc Jones. This week, they’ll play against one of the best quarterbacks in Orange County, the Monarchs’ Mark Ramstack. Mater Dei is ranked No. 9 in Orange County.

Ramstack, a senior, completed 14 of 17 passes for 193 yards and 3 touchdowns in Mater Dei’s 34-6 victory over Fountain Valley last week. Ramstack is a scrambling quarterback who often throws on the run.

That will be a change for Oceanside. Oceanside’s defensive backfield was not tested against Vista, which threw only one pass last week.

“We have some good kids playing in the secondary,” Oceanside Coach Roy Scaffidi said. “We won’t know how good, though, until about 10 p.m. Friday night.”

Fontana at Vista--Fontana is ranked No. 1 in the state for large schools by Cal Hi Sports. Vista is ranked No. 2 in San Diego County and No. 4 in the state. Fontana returns nine starters on offense on a team that lost in the Big Five semifinals last season. They started the 1987 season by beating Montclair, 42-0, last week.

The game will feature some exceptional running backs. Vista’s Jones rushed for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns against Oceanside. Teammate David Strojny rushed for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns. Fontana returns fullback Derrick Malone, who rushed for 1,284 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior.

Fallbrook at San Marcos--Fallbrook quarterback Mike Turiace, who threw for 208 yards last week, will be facing a San Marcos defense that allowed only seven points last week against Orange Glen, but gave up 186 yards passing. The schools have met for six straight seasons, and the visiting team has won each game.

Lincoln at Point Loma--Lincoln’s Darren Wagner scored 5 touchdowns and ran for 178 yards in the Hornets’ 82-0 victory over San Francisco Wilson. Point Loma Coach Benny Edens was impressed by that, but said he is more concerned about the potential for the long pass. Lincoln did not pass much against Wilson, but it did not need to pass.
