Although Savanna High School lost its Orange League opener Thursday night, bringing its 1987 record to 0-6, and although the Rebels were shut out again, extending their scoreless streak to 22 quarters, it could have been worse.

Savanna’s 24-0 loss to Anaheim was an improvement over last week, when Troy held the Rebels to four yards rushing in a 55-0 victory.

Against Anaheim, Savanna tailback Kenison Po Ching gained 101 yards on 25 carries.

And the Rebels, who have allowed an average of 49 points a game in the last four outings, held the Colonists to just two points in the first half, a safety scored when a punt snap sailed over Robbie Hynes’ head and bounced out of the end zone.

But for Savanna, the chance of victory ended in the third quarter when Anaheim scored three touchdowns to take a 24-0 lead. Running back Joaquin Garcia, who has rushed for 663 yards this season but had just 49 in the first half, gained 106 yards in the second half. He also caught touchdown passes of 11 and 7 yards from quarterback Robert Aldaz.

Garcia finished with 155 yards on 16 carries. Aldaz (4 of 9 for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns) ran in the 2-point conversion after the first touchdown, and Gerald Holloway scored the Colonists’ second touchdown on a 51-yard run.

And Savanna’s drought continued.

“We’re going to score this season,” said Dana Coleman, Savanna coach. “We’ve got a good bunch of kids.”

Bunch might be an exaggeration. There are 22 players on the Rebel roster, including four sophomores just promoted from junior varsity.

One of those sophomores, Carlos Robledo, split time with senior Tony Osendorf at quarterback. The two combined for 69 yards passing.
