Orange County Community College Roundup : Cypress Starts Conference Play With Victory Over Moorpark

Cypress College won 7 of 10 matches to defeat Moorpark, 28-12, in the Western State Conference season-opening wrestling match at Cypress Wednesday night.

Joey Gillis of Cypress had the only pin, stopping Diego Pena (170 pounds) at 3:51.

Frank Trujillo (129), Bill Montgomery (137), Chris Malavar (145), Art Orozco (153), Ralph Rucker (161) and Jose Orozco (180) all won for Cypress (6-0, 1-0).

Golden West 28, El Camino 16--Heavyweight Rich Brenton pinned Mike Galindo of El Camino to lead Golden West at home.

Andy Peterson of Golden West defeated Rick Gaunt, 10-6, at 180 pounds; Jason Dallas of Golden West defeated Jim Del La Cruz, 12-1, at 153, and Toshihiro Yukawa of Golden West defeated Rito Guerra, 10-8, at 129.

Golden West, which also won two forfeits, is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference. El Camino is 1-2 in conference.

In South Coast Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Pasadena 0--The Rustlers (12-1, 4-0), the top-ranked team in the state, were led by Laura Phillips, who had 14 kills and 12 digs at Golden West.

Dionne Powers had 10 kills and 7 blocks for Golden West.

In Orange Empire women’s volleyball:

Riverside 3, Cypress 0--Cypress, without returning all-conference player Stephanie Lockhart, who was ill, lost, 16-14, 15-9, 15-4, in the conference opener at Cypress.

Lisa Johnson had 7 kills and 11 assists and Kim O’Dowd had 5 kills and 7 assists for Cypress (2-6, 0-1). Riverside is 11-2, 1-0.

Saddleback 3, Rancho Santiago 1--Saddleback won its first conference match since November of 1985 with a 16-14, 15-3, 11-15, 15-11 victory at Saddleback.

Saddleback was 1-15 overall and 0-10 in conference last season but is 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference under its first-year coach, George Carey.

Mona Kort had seven kills for Rancho Santiago (3-4, 0-1).
