Pat Callaghan kicked a 24-yard field goal midway in the third quarter to give Corona del Mar a 3-0 Sea View League victory over Estancia Friday at Newport Harbor.

Callaghan’s game-winning kick capped a six-minute, 56-yard, 14-play drive which began with the second half kickoff.

Corona del Mar (3-5, 2-1) stopped three deep Estancia (2-6, 0-3) scoring threats. The first, in which Estancia advanced 62 yards in 15 plays to the Sea King two-yard line on the game’s first offensive series, ended when Scott Onstott was stopped on fourth and goal.

The second, which was set up when Mark Hartley returned an interception 17 yards to the Sea King 35, was stalled early in the second quarter when Greg Schabarum’s 35-yard field goal attempt fell short.

Then, after Callaghan’s field goal in the third quarter, Estancia took advantage of three Corona del Mar penalties to advance the ball to the Sea King six. But on second and goal, Hartley was thrown for a nine-yard loss on a flea-flicker attempt by Corona del Mar’s Ray Cook.

With 57 seconds left in the third quarter, Sea King John Katovsich intercepted a pass and returned it 47 yards to end the Eagle threat.

“Mistakes killed us,” said Estancia Coach John Liebengood. “We gave the game away.”
