Southern Section Tennis Playoffs : Bain, Phebus Lead Corona del Mar, 14-4

Robin Bain, the No. 1 singles player for Corona del Mar High School, swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, to help lead the Sea Kings to a 14-4 victory over Mission Viejo Thursday in a Southern Section 4-A girls’ first- round tennis match at Corona del Mar.

Kristy Phebus, the No. 2 player for Corona del Mar (17-2-1) won her three sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Corona del Mar is the third-seeded team in the 4-A.

Mission Viejo ends the season at 8-9.

In other 4-A matches:

Edison 11, University 7--Debbie Goldberger swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Edison (18-2) at home. Lisa Ammann also won her three sets, as did the doubles team of Nikki Turner and Genny Glofos.

Dana Hills 10, Fountain Valley 8--Kristin Green and Kelly Lynch swept in singles and Kim O’Neill and Michelle Michaels in doubles for Dana Hills (11-6), which won at Fountain Valley. Fountain Valley finishes 16-4.

Capistrano Valley 9, South Torrance 9 (Capistrano Valley wins on games, 74-71)--The doubles team of Jill Linhart and Dana Foster swept its sets, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1, as Capistrano Valley (13-2) won at home.

In the 3-A:

Laguna Hills 17, Charter Oak 1--Jenny Marques, Kim Wright and Brook Fleming swept in singles and the doubles teams of Katrina Heppler and Mai Nguyen and Suzi Kim and Sharron Oh swept for Laguna Hills (19-0) at home.

Laguna Hills is the third-seeded team in the 3-A.

Laguna Beach 13, Mater Dei 5--Mindy Leach swept her sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and the doubles team of Wendy Sugi and Kim Stephens swept its sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, for Laguna Beach (17-4) at home.

In the 2-A:

Valencia 12, Pacifica 6--Diane Ewing and Julie Williams each won her three sets to lead Valencia (13-4) at home. Diane Stoll and Stacy Zirwas also swept in doubles. Pacifica finishes 12-3.

Kennedy 11, Western 5--Kennedy was led by No. 1 singles player Marni Matsumoto, who swept her sets to improve to 43-3 this season. Kennedy is 12-3 and Western ends 9-6.
