Lions Score 244 in Intra-Squad Game; Gathers Connects for 60

In intra-squad games, it’s not always what they tell you so much as how they say it that’s informative.

So it wasn’t news Thursday night that both sides scored more than 100 points and that shots of all description were plentiful.

The pace was predicted before the game when guard Enoch Simmons warned the referees: “Hope you guys are ready. You’re gonna be tired when this one is over.”

For the record, the Crimson squad, led by transfers Hank Gathers and Corey Gaines and co-captain Mark Armstrong, beat the Grays, 131-113, despite 30 points by Mike Yoest.

The big news was the impression the much-ballyhooed transfers made: Gathers, out of USC, showing muscle underneath, a soft touch outside and an array of power dunks, scored 60 points on 27-of-34 shooting and was supported by 38 from UCLA emigrant Gaines, including three 3-pointers. Gaines added 16 assists.

Armstrong had 24 points for the winning team. Jeff Fryer and Enoch Simmons had 26 and 25 points for the losing Grays. In all, 8 of 12 players were in double figures.

So the Lions previewed much of what is expected of them this season--equal-opportunity scoring, non-stop running and hustle from co-captains Yoest and Armstrong, who had 13 rebounds apiece. Yoest was in mid-season form when he vaulted the bench in pursuit of a loose ball.

All this scoring was accomplished without sophomore guard Bo Kimble, sidelined with a knee injury. The USC transfer hopes to make his Loyola debut in about three weeks. He figures to be among the Lions’ leading scorers.
