Hank Egan, the University of San Diego basketball coach, announced Friday that three Los Angeles area high school seniors and one community college transfer have signed national letters of intent to play for the Toreros in the 1988-89 season.

The high school players who signed are Kelvin Woods, a 6-foot 5-inch forward from Damien High in Compton; Carlos Carrillo a 6-6 forward from Bosco Tech in Rosemead; and Alan Lewis, a 6-8 forward from Fullerton High.

Also joining the Toreros is Anthony Thomas, a 6-3 guard from San Diego Mesa College.

“We’re as happy as we could be with the players we have,” Egan said. “All of the kids are good athletes, and they will all help us.”

USD’s fourth-year coach seemed especially excited to have Carrillo, whom he compared to former USD shooting guard Pete Murphy.

“Carrillo can shoot it as well as anybody I’ve seen,” Egan said. “He’s like a Murphy with a quicker release.”

The NCAA’s early signing period continues through next Wednesday.
