Fullerton Survives 120 Yards of Penalties to Beat Troy, 10-0

Fullerton High School edged Troy, 10-0, in a penalty-marred game at Fullerton District Stadium Friday night to remain in contention for one of the Freeway League’s remaining playoff berths.

Fullerton’s victory, coupled with La Habra’s 30-24 win over League champion Sunny Hills, creates a three-way tie among Fullerton, Troy and La Habra for second place. Each team has a 3-2 league record. A coin flip will determine the playoff participants.

The Indians scored on their first possession of the game when John Bailey kicked a 31-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining in the first period. Until its lone touchdown in the closing minutes, Fullerton was hit with 120 yards in penalties.

Troy quarterback Brad Zeppieri was intercepted three times, as Rene Arias picked off two passes after they were deflected by one of his teammates.

Following Arias’ second interception, Indian fullback Steve DePhillips ran 90 yards to the Warrior 6-yard line. DePhillips then scored on a 10-yard run with 2:10 remaining.

Fullerton (3-7 overall) had 174 yards in total offense. Troy (4-6) had 140 yards.
