Fallbrook Passes Up Mt. Carmel

Tom Pack knew that Mt. Carmel, the only undefeated team in the Palomar League, had a weak spot--its pass defense.

“What team went after Mt. Carmel the best this year?” asked Pack, Fallbrook’s coach. “Orange Glen (in a 26-21 loss). And they did it with the pass. I knew a passing team could hurt them.”

If there is any team in the county known for passing, it is Fallbrook. Quarterback Mike Turiace completed 30 of 37 passes for 286 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Fallbrook to a 31-21 victory over Mt. Carmel at Fallbrook High Friday night.

Mt. Carmel (8-1 overall, 5-1 in league play) had clinched the Palomar League title before Friday night’s game. Fallbrook (7-3, 4-2), the defending San Diego Section 3-A champion, finished in a tie for second place with Orange Glen, earning an automatic playoff berth.

Turiace threw scoring passes of 19 and 10 yards to Jeff Pack and an 8-yarder to Darrow Nelson.
