World Cup of Golf : Scots Take Lead in Wind, Rain

Sandy Lyle and Sam Torrance, playing in high winds and driving rain, gave Scotland a three-shot lead at 283 Thursday in the second round of the 33rd World Cup of Golf.

“We both played very well. Both had a lot of opportunities. If we’d made a few more putts, we’d be very comfortably in front,” said Lyle, who has a history of strong play on the 6,761-yard, par-72 Bay course.

Lyle had a bogey-free round of 69 and moved into a tie for the individual lead at 137 with Ian Woosnam of Wales, who shot a 70.

The U.S. team of Ben Crenshaw and Payne Stewart had more trouble with the difficult conditions, which helped stretch the playing time to almost six hours for 18 holes.

The Americans, who led the 32-nation competition at the end of the first round, dropped to second place at 286. Crenshaw had a 73 that included a two-putt birdie-4 on the final hole. Stewart also shot a 73.
