Running back Marc Sherman threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Rodgers on a flea-flicker play with 19 seconds left in the game to give Francis Parker a 21-16 victory over Bishop’s Academy in the eight-man football championship game Friday night at Mira Mesa High School.
Tom Phanco had thrown a 30-yard pass to John Glover for a touchdown with two minutes left in the game to give Bishop’s a 16-15 lead.
Parker (8-1) took possession on its 15-yard line after the ensuing kickoff and drove 65 yards in 1:31 for the touchdown.
Bishop’s (9-2), which won more games this season than it had in the previous five years combined, had beaten Parker earlier this season, 41-23.
“We knew we could come back and beat them,” Parker Coach Ed Strange said. “We ran right at them.”
Parker took a 15-0 lead in the first quarter. Ron Quini ran 29 yards for a touchdown. Parker made the score 8-0 when Phanco completed a pass for a two-point conversion. Scott Dreapeau also scored on a 17-yard run.
Bishop’s Brett Daniel scored on a 3-yard run to close the gap to 15-8 with two minutes to play in the first half.
