Area Roundup : Titan Women Open Season in Tournament

The Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball teams opens the 1987-88 season as the host of the Cal State Fullerton basketball tournament tonight and Saturday.

Fullerton plays the University of San Francisco at 6 p.m in the first round and Cal Poly Pomona plays Sam Houston State at 7:30 in the other game.

The winners meet Saturday at 8 p.m. for the championship and the losers meet in the third-place game at 6 p.m.

Fullerton was 12-16 last season and returns five players that started at times last season, including academic all-American Amy Torczon who averaged 11.4 points and 7.6 rebounds a game.

San Francisco, which is coached by the husband and wife team of Bill Nepfel and Mary Hile-Nepfel, returns one starter (Chris Hill) from last season’s 19-8 team. Hill, a senior forward, averaged 8.5 points and 7.2 rebounds a game.

Cal Poly Pomona, which was 29-3 and the runner-up in the Division II championship, is led by center Niki Bracken who is averaging 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games this season.

Sam Houston returns four starters from last season’s 9-18 team, including center Sandra Boyd who averaged 14.1 points and 8.5 rebounds a game last season.

The men’s soccer teams from Golden West and Rancho Santiago colleges play in the second round of the Southern California Community College tournament Saturday.

Golden West, which won the South Coast Conference and is the top-seeded team in Southern California, plays host to San Diego Mesa at 6 p.m. Golden West is 16-2-4 and Mesa is 10-4.

Golden West is led by Kurt Lundberg who was voted the most valuable player of the South Coast Conference this season. He led the conference with 20 goals. Golden West goalkeeper Erik Smith also was a first-team all-conference selection. He had 10 shutouts.

Mike Weiss, Omar Ortiz and Doug McCready of Golden West also made the first team.

Golden West Coach Greg Ghica was voted the coach of the year.

Rancho Santiago, which won the Orange Empire Conference, plays EL Camino at 2 p.m. at Rancho Santiago.

The winners advance to the four-team state tournament that is scheduled Dec. 5-6 at a site to be determined.

The Orange Flyers Track Club is hosting its seventh annual Turkey Trot Sunday that will feature four different races at and around Villa Park High School.

There will be a half-mile run for those 9 and under at 7:45 a.m., a two-mile open run at 8 a.m. and 5- and 13.1-mile open runs at 8:30 p.m.

Entry fee is $12 with a T-shirt and $7 without. All money raised will be used to help cross-country teams at Orange County junior high schools.

Applications are being accepted for the Fountain Valley Community Services Division Winter 5-man and 5-woman basketball leagues though Dec. 18.

Fees are $200 a team that can be up to 12 players. There will be three divisions. Games will be played at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center. The women’s league starts Jan. 11 and the men’s league starts Jan. 17.
