White, Jacobs Named to All-State Team

Junior running back Russell White of Crespi High and offensive lineman Brian Jacobs of Hart were selected to the all-state football first team Monday by Cal-Hi Sports of Sacramento.

White, a 6-1, 190-pound tailback who was the 1986 Cal-Hi player of the year, rushed for 2,269 yards and scored 38 touchdowns in 1987. Senior quarterback Bret Johnson of El Toro, who passed for 2,085 yards despite missing four games, was selected player of the year.

Other area players named to the team were kicker Chris Noonan of Chaminade and linebacker David Wilson and defensive back Sam Edwards of Reseda. All three were selected to the medium-school first team. Punter David Stratton of Moorpark was selected to the small-school first team.

White and Canyon lineman Justin Fix were selected to the all-underclassman team. White was also chosen junior of the year and Canyon running back Chris Peery was selected best sophomore.

White and Jacobs (6-5, 255), who were named All-Americans by USA Today last month, also were selected to the first team of California Football Magazine, based in Redondo Beach. Edwards of Reseda was selected to the defensive first team.

Valley-area players selected to the California Football offensive second team include tight end Sean Brown of Granada Hills and Noonan of Chaminade.

California Football’s honorable-mention team includes quarterbacks Darren Renfro of Hart, Jeremy Leach of Granada Hills and Jeff Barrett of Burroughs; running backs Marc Monestime of Thousand Oaks, Chip Grant of North Hollywood, Ronald Wilkinson of Reseda and Bryan Addison of Chatsworth; receivers Vince Ferry of Alemany and Bruce Luizzi of Burroughs; lineman Tom Curran of Canyon; linebackers J. J. Lasley of Crespi, Mack Humphrey of Thousand Oaks and Wilson of Reseda; and defensive back Craig Whitten of Hart.
