Top-seeded San Pedro, led by high-scoring forward Raul Haro, will begin defense of the L. A. City soccer title at 2:30 p.m. today in a playoff opener against Huntington Park at Daniels Field.
This is the 16th playoff appearance in 17 years for the Pirates (12-2), who finished last season with a 17-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the state, according to Cal-Hi Sports.
In three years under Coach Hank Nozaki, San Pedro has compiled a 40-4-2 record.
Haro has been the team’s leading scorer each of those seasons. The senior, who has 99 career goals, has scored 32 times this year. He set a City record with 36 goals last season.
The Marine League champions will face a Huntington Park team that finished second in the Eastern League. It is San Pedro’s 11th league title.
Second-round games will be played Tuesday, with the semifinals on Jan. 14 and the finals on Jan. 22.
Marine League runner-up Locke opens the playoffs today against Eastern League champion Garfield, the No. 2 seed.
