Girls Basketball : North Hollywood Routs Granada Hills

North Hollywood High might have had an eye on Friday’s West Valley League opener against Reseda, but the Huskies did more than go through the motions in a 79-31 nonleague win over Granada Hills on Wednesday at North Hollywood.

Junior Michelle Cabaldon scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Huskies, who recorded a season high for points scored. Cabaldon, a 5-8 forward, scored 17 points in North Hollywood’s last game, a 54-42 upset of Millikan in the consolation championship of the Gahr tournament.

“She’s really maturing this year,” North Hollywood Coach Rich Allen said. “She really helps us add another facet to the offense.”

Sandrine Rocher scored 15 points, Leticia Carranza added 10 points and 8 assists and Melinda Anger grabbed 12 rebounds for the Huskies.

“Most teams figure they have to stop Carranza and Rocher to beat us,” Allen said. “But Cabaldon gives them another player to think about.”

Last season, North Hollywood twice defeated Reseda and won the league title. Reseda, however, beat the Huskies in the City Section 3-A Division championship game in March.

Notre Dame 53, Immaculate Heart 29--Notre Dame had seven steals and outscored the Pandas, 16-2, in the second quarter of the nonleague game at home.

“We started pressuring more and we just got a ton of turnovers,” Notre Dame Coach Rob Dimuro said. “Plus we were getting good shot opportunities.”

Center Andrea Banducci took advantage of most of the good shots. The 6-0 junior scored 16 points in the first half and finished with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Beth Cogan added 10 points and 6 rebounds as Alemany improved to 5-5.

Burroughs 55, Crescenta Valley 21--Senior guards Kelley McCauley and Karen Knoop spearheaded the Indians’ second-quarter pressure defense that turned a close game into a nonleague rout at Burroughs.
