Moorpark College Women Outnumber and Outgun Canyons in 86-25 Romp
With only five players on the College of the Canyons women’s basketball team, the Cougars won’t lack for sympathy this season.
Take Moorpark Coach Gary Abraham for example.
“You feel sorry for this team in a way,” Abraham said. “I know how tough it is because I’ve been in that situation.”
Moorpark stomped Canyons, 86-25, in a Western State Conference game Saturday night at Moorpark. Canyons (1-7, 0-3) has lost three consecutive conference games by 60 points or more.
“The situation is really bad,” Canyons Coach Randy Yamanouye said. “How many other basketball teams have only five players?”
For Moorpark (10-10, 2-0), guard Karina Hardman scored a game-high 20 points, slightly below her 24-point average. Teammate Carol Kellick added 16 points and Michele Brown and Kristie Sterbens each scored 12.
Ann Jeffries led Canyons with 12 points, followed by Wendy Hawthorne with 11.
