High School Basketball : Crespi Rally Falls Short Against Loyola, 79-64

With starting guard Mike Tilkian sidelined for the second consecutive game, Crespi staged a late rally that fell short as Loyola defeated the Celts, 79-64, in a Del Rey League game at Loyola on Thursday night.

Forward Bill Foudy, one of three Celts in double figures, led Crespi with 16 points. Chris McGee, who started for Tilkian, added 13 points and guard Matt Turner scored 12.

Crespi (10-8, 2-3 in league play) cut the Loyola lead to six points late in the game before the Cubs pulled away.

“I felt like we battled them,” Crespi Coach Paul Muff said. “They just came out and played a better third quarter than we did.”

Tilkian, a senior, had his appendix removed Monday.

Loyola’s Charles Belcher led all scorers with 22 points. He was one of four Loyola players who scored in double figures.

First-place Loyola improved to 3-1 in league play.

Alemany 79, St. John Bosco 65--Tony Lopez pumped in 26 points for the Indians in a Del Rey League game at St. John Bosco.

Jon Beauchemin added 16 points and Dave Berganio had 11 for Alemany (7-7, 3-1). St. John Bosco dropped to 0-4 in league play.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 93, Birmingham 34--Michelle Cabaldon scored 20 points and Leticia Carranza scored 15 points and handed out 12 assists for the Huskies in a West Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Nikki O’Neal had 10 points and 12 rebounds and Melinda Anger added 13 points and 14 rebounds for North Hollywood (8-3, 2-1 in league play). Birmingham fell to 2-1 in league play.

Burroughs 40, Hart 32--Led by Debbie Penney’s game-high 14 points, Burroughs scored its first Foothill League victory. Quaif Van Benschoten scored 8 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Indians (14-3, 1-2).

Kim Posey led Hart with 12 points.

Burbank 39, San Gabriel 27--Christine Rumfola scored 16 points to lead Burbank in the Foothill League game at San Gabriel. Jennifer Gomez added nine points for Burbank (10-4, 2-1).

Louisville 60, St. Genevieve 22--Kristin Carpenter and Becky Long each scored 14 points for Louisville in the San Fernando Valley League game at home.

Carpenter also had a game-high 18 rebounds and Long a game-high 8 assists. Teammate Nancy Robinson added 11 points, and Kelly Alexy and Mary Hudson each had seven steals for Louisville (7-8, 2-1).

Montclair Prep 46, Village Christian 17--Montclair Prep’s Charis Kubrin scored a game-high 16 points and Nikki Smith added 14 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in the Alpha League game at Village Christian.

Lorie Oleesky added 13 points and dished out 6 assists for Montclair Prep (5-4, 1-1). Village Christian dropped to 0-2 in league play.
