High School Winter Sports : Gomez Shot at Buzzer Gives Burbank Win

Jennifer Gomez sank a 38-foot three-point shot with no time remaining to give Burbank a 66-65 victory over Burroughs in a Foothill League game at Burroughs on Thursday night.

“That was an incredible shot she made,” Burroughs Coach Brian Hurst said. “It was right on target.”

Gomez finished with 15 points. Teammates Kris Rumfola and Karrie Parsons were the game’s top scorers with 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Quaif VanBenschoten led Burroughs with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Alemany 78, St. Genevieve 24--It is not easy to rout a team and avoid being accused of running up the score, but Alemany Coach Melissa Melton was confronted with that situation in Alemany’s San Fernando Valley League victory at Branford Park in Sun Valley.

“When it gets out of hand we try to pull back,” Melton said. “But it’s hard when kids are playing full court.”

Western Christian 51, Montclair Prep 29--The visiting Mounties made 3 of 19 shots from the field in the first half on their way to an Alpha League loss.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

L. A. Lutheran 66, Simi Lutheran 52--L. A. Lutheran’s Stephen Willweber scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead the Lions to a nonleague victory at home.

California Christian 74, Coast Christian 62--California Christian outscored the Saints, 33-13, in the third quarter to break open a close Heritage League game at Coast Christian.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Hart 1, Muir 0--Chuck Foster scored for Hart (12-4, 6-2 in league play) in a Foothill League match at Hart.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Alemany 4, Muir 0--Senior center forward Kelly Cook scored two goals to lead the Indians to a Pacific League victory at home.

Hart 2, Arcadia 1--Hart improved to 2-1 in Pacific League play and moved into second place behind Alemany.

Chaminade 4, Marlborough 2--Cris Casazza scored three goals, including career goal No. 63 and Fiona Chaney also scored for Chaminade (9-3, 6-0) in a Sunshine League match.

BOYS’ WRESTLING

Alemany 60, Chaminade 15--Alemany’s Gary Olasci pinned his opponent to remain undefeated and lead the Indians to a Santa Fe League match at Chaminade.

Harvard 40, Faith Baptist 28--Harvard’s Scott Tanaka improved his record to 11-4 in the 128-pound division.

El Camino Real 50, Canoga Park 21--Scott Spindel pinned his opponent to improve his record in the 145-pound division to 24-2-2 for El Camino Real.
