High School Basketball : Chaminade Sails to Win Over Salesian

Andy Connolly scored 15 points and teammates John Carolan and Steve Hurdle each added 10 as Chaminade cruised to a 71-52 victory over Salesian in a Santa Fe League game at Chaminade on Thursday night.

The victory gave the Eagles a 7-2 record in league play and set up a showdown with first-place Cathedral (8-1) at Chaminade on Saturday night.

Chaminade (12-6) took a 20-3 lead in the first quarter by forcing six Salesian turnovers with a stifling full-court zone press.

“We played very well in the first quarter,” Chaminade Coach Mike Lynn said. “But we didn’t keep the same intensity for the last three quarters. The guys kind of took a vacation.”

Chris Bruckner added 9 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Chaminade.

Frank Llorens scored 24 points for Salesian (2-13, 1-8).

Harvard 80, La Salle 54--Every member of the team scored for Harvard in the Santa Fe League game at La Salle. Senior guard Charles Patton scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Saracens (9-6, 7-2).

Bell-Jeff 65, St. Genevieve 56--Junior guard Ray Witt was 6 for 6 from the field--including a 5-of-5 streak in the fourth quarter--to lead Bell-Jeff to a Santa Fe League win at St. Genevieve.

Witt, despite a sprained left ankle, helped Bell-Jeff (11-6, 7-2) pull away after the Guards led, 42-40, at the end of three quarters.

Chris Dyer scored 12 of Bell-Jeff’s 19 points in the third quarter. St. Genevieve fell to 7-10, 3-6.

Bel Air Prep 76, Buckley 73--John Madolenco scored 36 points for Buckley in the Delphic League game.

Sean Lewis, who was 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, scored 26 points and Ahmad Clayton added 23 off the bench for Bel Air Prep (9-8, 4-3). Buckley is 4-3 in league play.

GIRLS

Burroughs 65, Alhambra 34--Burroughs capitalized on its height advantage inside with Debbie Penney (6-0), Wendy Bruse (5-11) and Quaif VanBenschoten (6-3) in a Foothill League game at Burroughs.

VanBenschoten, a senior, had a game-high 20 points, 17 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Penney scored 15 points and Bruse added 8 for Burroughs (16-4, 3-3). Karen Knoop had six assists.

Alhambra (4-2 in league play) defeated Burroughs, 51-34, in the first round of league play.

Bell-Jeff 81, St. Genevieve 25--Carlyn Couch had game-high totals of 25 points and 14 rebounds as Bell-Jeff dominated the San Fernando Valley League game at St. Genevieve.

Couch made 12 of 16 shots from the field and teammate Sarah Dancs added 16 points and 7 steals for Bell-Jeff.

Montclair Prep 43, L.A. Baptist 32--Sophomore forward Nikki Smith scored 17 points and had 16 rebounds to lead the Mounties (7-6, 3-3) in a Santa Fe League game at Montclair Prep.

Charis Kubrin scored 19 points and Lorie Oleesky added 10 for Montclair Prep.
