THE PREPS : Mater Dei Girls Roll Past Pius X, 61-27

Kelly O’Brien scored 20 points and Janet Rensing added 10 as the Mater Dei High girls’ basketball team scored its 56th consecutive Angelus League victory, 61-27, over Pius X Tuesday night at Mater Dei.

O’Brien, a 6-foot junior center, scored 14 points in the first quarter as the Monarchs (18-5, 7-0) took a 24-5 lead at the quarter’s end. O’Brien, who scored the game’s first eight points, finished the quarter making 7 of 8 field goal attempts.

O’Brien, who finished 10 of 13 from the floor, also had 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Mater Dei, which has not lost a league game since 1982, made 10 of 16 shots from the floor in the first quarter. Pius X (8-11, 4-3) made only 2 of 9 shots in the opening quarter and 10 of 60 in the game.

“We came out real relaxed tonight,” Mater Dei Coach Brenda Yecke said.

“They just didn’t have the height to contend with us.”

Michele Martinez led Pius X with eight points.

“We try not to think too much about the winning streak,” Yecke said. “We just try to take things one game at a time and see what happens from there.”
