THE PREPS : Soccer : Laguna Hills Girls Win Again but Finally Give Up a Goal

It took 16 girls’ soccer games, but a Pacific Coast League opponent finally scored on Laguna Hills High School. However, the damage was minimal, as the Hawks routed Laguna Beach, 8-1, Tuesday at Laguna Hills.

Claudia Smedes and Heather McIntyre each scored two goals for Laguna Hills (14-5-1, 6-0), which outshot Laguna Beach, 31-3. Joanne Novel, Xanne Brakke, Suzie Kim and Christina DeFelice all scored goals for the Hawks.

Karen Young scored in the second half for Laguna Beach. It was the first goal Laguna Hills has surrendered since the league was formed last season.

Amy Avery made 23 saves for Laguna Beach (1-10, 0-5).

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 3, Katella 0--Esperanza (17-1-2, 6-0-1) set a school record with 53 shots at Katella. Maria DelaTorre scored two goals and Lisa Quezada one.

Los Alamitos 6, Loara 0--Holly Kunst scored two goals for host Los Alamitos (19-2-2), which outshot Loara, 28-1. Kunst, Tanja Weth and Jaycee Leitner scored in the second half. Rachel Levin made 22 saves for Loara (1-5-1 in league).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 7, Bolsa Grande 0--Stefanie Stucker scored two goals, and Kristin Daily, Stacey Reynaga, Jill Brownlee, Cheri Setterland and Tiffany Powell one each at La Quinta. La Quinta outshot Bolsa Grande, 26-1. La Quinta is 14-4-1, 6-1 and tied for first place with Kennedy.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 9, Saddleback 0--Erinn Aley and Katie Geib each scored two goals and Stacy Petersen, Amy Jacobs, Julie Smith, Katherine Kolstad and Jolie Watkins one each for Corona del Mar (11-5-2, 5-0-2) at Saddleback. It was Corona del Mar’s 12th shutout this season. Saddleback is 0-7 in league play.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 3, Dana Hills 1--Mission Viejo’s Julie Foudy tied the score midway through the first half, and teammates Tammy VanOpdorp and Kelli Hampton added two more goals to give Mission Viejo (19-0-2, 6-0-1) the victory. Foudy’s goal was her 18th of the season.

In Freeway League boys’ action:

Sunny Hills 5, Sonora 0--Nathan Bachtell scored three goals to lead Sunny Hills (14-4, 6-0). Goalie Jason Sugarman made seven saves for his sixth shutout in the last seven games. MiKe McCuin and Eddie Charles also scored. Goalie Jeff Ashbery made four saves for Sonora (4-12, 2-5).

La Habra 1, Troy 1--Sal Maldonado scored five minutes into the first half for La Habra (9-5-4, 4-2-1). Troy’s Sean Diskin tied the score 10 minutes later. Goalie Mario Munoz made 8 saves for La Habra. Jeff Holcomb had 12 saves for Troy (9-3-4, 5-0-2).

In the Orange League:

Western 6, Magnolia 0--Eddie Anaya scored three second-half goals to lead Western (5-6-4, 2-1-2). Paco Jimenez scored in the first half and John Muir and Jerry Hauck scored in the second. Magnolia is 0-4 in league play.

Anaheim 1, Brea-Olinda 0--Fernando Camacho scored four minutes into the game giving Anaheim (4-0 in league) the victory. Anaheim’s Jose Escobedo had 11 saves. Dan La France had seven saves for Brea-Olinda (7-5-6, 2-2-2). Brea-Olinda had 18 shots, Anaheim 10.
