Boys’ Soccer Roundup : Sunny Hills Wins Again With 7th Straight Shutout

Goalie Jason Sugerman made five saves as Sunny Hills High School recorded its seventh consecutive boys’ soccer shutout with a 4-0 victory over Buena Park Thursday at Buena Park.

Nathan Bachtel scored two goals for Sunny Hills (15-4 overall, 6-0-1 in the Freeway League). Carlos Miramontes and Nick Rose added one goal each. Sugerman has been in goal for each of Sunny Hills’ shutouts.

In another Freeway League game:

La Habra 4, Fullerton 1--At La Habra, David Vallejo broke a 1-1 tie late in the first half with the first of his two goals. Vallejo then made it 3-1 early in the second half. La Habra (10-5-4, 5-2-1) took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game on a goal by Sal Maldonado. Fullerton’s John Davis tied the score with a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the half. Vallejo scored two minutes later. La Habra’s Melcher Carillo also scored a second-half goal. Goalie Mario Munoz made one save for La Habra.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 5, St. Paul 1--Mike Ammann had two goals and two assists as host Mater Dei remained unbeaten in league play. Doug West, John Coggins and Tim Brambiala also scored for Mater Dei (22-1-1, 8-0). Kurt Pillo scored for St. Paul. Goalie Mike Reis made two first-half saves and Dan Thomas had four saves in the second half. John Putman made nine saves for St. Paul.

Servite 5, Pius X 0--Jim Berry scored two goals and Robert Diaz, Erwin Garcia and Mike Howell scored one each for host Servite (16-5-1, 6-1-1). Tom Nieto and Robert Diaz had one save each for Servite.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 8, Magnolia 1--Jeff Husdon, Kevin Stipeck, Chad Grunseth and Mike Moosman scored in the first half for host Valencia (9-6-3, 3-0-3). Ray Ordupour, Ralph Aparicia, Victor Venegas and Art Gonzales scored in the second half for Valencia, which is in a first-place tie with Anaheim. The teams meet Tuesday.

Western 0, Anaheim 0--Goalie Mark Winstead made five saves for Western (5-6-5, 2-1-4). Joe Escobedo made eight saves for Anaheim (4-0-1 in league).
