Prep Soccer : Queen’s Three Goals Lift El Dorado Into First Place

Larry Queen scored three goals to lead El Dorado High School to a 3-1 Empire League victory over Katella Friday in a boys’ soccer match at El Dorado.

The victory put El Dorado (10-5-2, 5-2-1) into first place in the league, one point ahead of Katella (10-2-7, 3-1-4).

Queen, a junior forward, scored his last two goals on penalty kicks. El Dorado outshot Katella, 16-8. Ken Scott had five saves for El Dorado.

Goalie Scott Bogardus had 17 saves for Katella.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 5, Foothill 1--Jeremy Amen, Derrek Ujiki and Jeff Peterson scored in the first half to lead host Villa Park (16-6-1, 6-1-1). Mark Wiedeman and Chris Hennessey scored in the second half for Villa Park. Dave Wetzler had one save in the first half and Tony Lanzone had two saves in the second for Villa Park, which is in a first-place tie with Canyon.

Santa Ana 3, El Modena 0--Rene Munoz, Jose Ventura and Serafin DeLeon scored one goal each for host Santa Ana (6-9-4, 4-2-2). Gus Plasencia had four saves for Santa Ana, and Jay Eastman had six saves for El Modena (6-9-3, 0-5-3).

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 3, Tustin 0--Senior forward Carlos Zavala scored his 19th goal of the season to lead host Saddleback. Andres Solis and Jose Perez also scored for first-place Saddleback (14-5-2, 6-1-1). Miguel Ochoa had four saves for Saddleback and Matt Alexander had seven saves for Tustin.

Newport Harbor 4, University 0--Tom Walker and David Woodruff scored two goals each for host Newport Harbor (11-4-4, 4-1-3) which is two points behind first-place Saddleback. Ken Wilcut had four saves for Newport Harbor, and Hans Lin had four saves for University, 1-5-2 in league play.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 0, Capistrano Valley 0--Goalie Jeff Duvall had 4 saves to help Dana Hills (7-5-4, 2-3-3) at Capistrano Valley. It was the third straight shutout for Duvall. Capistrano Valley is 15-5-4 overall and 4-2-2 in league play.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 2, Huntington Beach 0--Darrin Fishman and Mike Lapper scored in the first half for first-place Marina. Dave Buehring had 2 saves for Marina (13-8-1, 7-1) and James Aston 16 saves for Huntington Beach.

Fountain Valley 2, Westminster 1--Greg Tan scored two goals to lead Fountain Valley (11-5-3, 6-2) at Huntington Beach High School. With Fountain Valley leading, 1-0, early in the second half, Westminster’s Greg Sorenson tied the score. Tan then scored the game-winner with 10 minutes left.

In girls’ games:

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 3, St. Joseph 1--Tina Manfre, Laura Spinner and Kari Marshall each scored once to lead Mater Dei (18-4-1, 8-0) at St. Joseph. Mater Dei goalie Michelle Lodyga had four saves.

In the Freeway League:

Rosary 1, Sonora 0--Heather McNatt scored in the first half for visiting Rosary (6-2-2 in league play). Kim Carlberg had 10 saves for Rosary.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 8, Western 0--Sandy Tennison, a sophomore center halfback, scored five goals to lead Brea-Olinda (9-2-4, 6-0-1) at home. Elise Crowder added two goals and Shana Neely one for Brea.
