Volleyball’s Two Best Sign With Hawaii

The top two high school volleyball players in San Diego County won’t be counted on to build a dynasty at the college of their choice.

That already is in place.

But Carolyn Taeatafa and Cheri Boyer might have a more difficult assignment: Help the University of Hawaii stay on top.

Taeatafa and Boyer Wednesday confirmed that they will sign letters of intent with Hawaii, the defending National Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball champion.

Taeatafa, a 5-foot 9-inch outside hitter from Sweetwater High School, has yet to score sufficiently on the Scholastic Aptitude Test and may have to sit out her first season in compliance with Proposition 48. Taeatafa plans to take the test twice more, if needed, in hopes of scoring at least a 700.

Taeatafa, a Samoan, said her decision to accept a scholarship to Hawaii was influenced by the fact that she has relatives living there.

Boyer, who, like Taeatafa, plays for the San Diego Volleyball Club, is a 6-1 setter. Hawaii setter Martina Cincerova has one year of eligibility remaining, so Boyer is expected to play as a right-side hitter next season, then move to setter in 1989.

Boyer, from Poway High School, said she also was recruited by UCLA, USC, Cal State Long Beach, San Diego State and Brigham Young. Her sister, Ann, is the starting setter at UCLA.

The third-rated player in San Diego County, Jennifer Torns of Mt. Carmel High School, will attend the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

Torns, a 5-8 outside hitter, received a scholarship offer from nationally ranked Pittsburgh but opted for William & Mary for academic reasons.

Also entering into Torns’ decision was the fact that four William & Mary players--Heidi Erpelding, Leslie Ward, Beth Ann Hull and Kate Pearson--are from the San Diego area.

Two other members of the San Diego Volleyball Club also made college commitments Wednesday:

Tina Thompson, a 6-1 middle blocker from Francis Parker High School, will attend Houston. Setter Stephanie Eischen of Francis Parker says she will attend Division III champion UC San Diego.

Trista Sherrod, a 5-4 defensive specialist from Torrey Pines, plans to walk on at California.
