THE COLLEGES : Community College Roundup : Cypress Unloads on East L.A. in 20-4 Victory

Tim Churchill and Doug Yates had three hits and two RBIs each to lead Cypress College to a 20-4 victory over East Los Angeles Thursday in the opening round of the Cypress baseball tournament.

Cypress (5-1), which had 20 hits, scored eight runs in both the third and eighth innings. Mike Segovia, Mark Steinart and Ken Briggs had two hits and two RBIs each for Cypress. Rich Lodding (1-1) pitched six shutout innings and had three strikeouts in the victory.

In other Cypress tournament games:

Golden West 9, MiraCosta 0--Bill Baird, a sophomore right-hander from Edison High School, pitched a two-hitter and had nine strikeouts to lead the Rustlers in the season opener at home. Baird walked two and hit a batter. Tom Smythe and Joe Aversa had two hits and two RBIs each for Golden West, which scored four runs in the first and two in the second. Jim Buccheri had four stolen bases for Golden West, which scored five unearned runs on four MiraCosta errors.

In nonconference games:

Rancho Santiago 12, San Diego City 3--Rich Gonzales hit a three-run triple in the fourth inning to lead visiting Rancho Santiago (4-0). The Dons scored six runs in the fourth to lead, 9-1. Wade Clester and Nick Santa Cruz had two hits and three RBIs each for Rancho Santiago. Bobby Hamelin had two hits and two RBIs for Rancho Santiago. Jack Bailey (1-0) pitched the first five innings for the victory.

San Diego Mesa 15, Fullerton 10--Phil Diplock, Emmitt Cohick and Rodney Klopfer each drove in two runs for Fullerton (1-1). Jerry Spradlin (0-1) took the loss.
