Girls’ Basketball Playoffs

In other 3-A games:

Esperanza 59, Mission Viejo 55--Jennifer Harney had 13 points, Jamye English 11 and Karin Davidson 10 for Esperanza, which upset host Mission Viejo, the defending 3-A champion. Tricia Stringam had 22 points for the third-seeded Diablos (21-6). A wild-card entry, Esperanza (14-11) plays Palos Verdes in the second round Wednesday.

Brea-Olinda 79, Tustin 38--Aimee McDaniel scored 32 points to lead four players in double figures for the top-seeded Wildcats. Susan Tousey added 14 points and 6 rebounds, Kristin Blair scored 14 points and Tammy Blackburn 10 as Brea increased its record to 26-1. Tustin, held to 14 points in the second half, finished the season at 15-12.

Katella 56, Fontana 35--Joni Easterly scored 9 of her game-high 26 points in the third quarter as Katella broke open a close game. Katella (17-8) switched to a man-to-man defense and outscored Fontana, 20-5, in the quarter, Stacy Johnson’s three-point shot at the buzzer giving the Empire League champions a 37-20 lead. Johnson finished with 10 points. Fontana ends the season at 18-7.

Capistrano Valley 62, University 27--Heather Schoeny, a senior center, had a game-high 27 points for host Capistrano Valley (19-6). Shelley Zierhut added 11 points for Capistrano Valley, which plays Katella on Wednesday. Sandy Johnson led University with 8 points.

In the 2-A:

La Quinta 81, Garey 46--La Quinta, the top seeded 2-A team, led, 35-22, at the half but led, 55-30, after the third quarter. Donna Gondringer scored 30 points and had 8 rebounds for La Quinta (22-3). Amy Jalewalia, a 6-foot 1-inch sophomore, had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Laura Anderson had 12 points and 9 assists and Patti Leuta had 11 points for La Quinta.

Woodbridge 65, Montebello 46--Kathy Millat scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds for host Woodbridge (22-5). Leslie Rathbun scored 11, Randee Mahoney scored 10 and had 7 assists and Angie Hobner scored 10 for Woodbridge. Woodbridge hit 25 of 35 free throws, including 12 of 15 in the fourth quarter.

Indio 58, Orange 35--Alicia East scored 16 points and had 18 rebounds for host Orange, which ends the season, 9-10. Laurie Sallinger had 9 points for Orange.

Edgewood 61, Kennedy 28--Kim Hansen and Ingrid Dixson each scored 19 points for Edgewood (24-0) at Edgewood, which led, 23-6, after the first quarter. Kennedy finished the season at 10-11.

Fullerton 35, Temple City 34--Fullerton led, 20-8, at the end of the first half and hung on at Temple City. Lynn Gilbert led Fullerton (14-6) with 10 points.

In Small Schools:

Liberty Christian 64, Pasadena Poly 45--Lisa Whitney scored 19 points, Sharon Crouch 17 and Heather Cielnicky 12 for Liberty Christian (18-1) at home. Kim Engstrom added 15 rebounds, 7 assists and 7 points for the second-seeded team.
