Miller Succeeds Saraceno at Providence

Marc Saraceno, who guided Providence High’s baseball team to a 42-11 record in his first two years at the school, will not coach the Pioneers this year because of a conflict between his work schedule and the team’s practice hours.

John Miller was hired to replace Saraceno. Miller coached high school baseball in New York seven years ago before moving to California. He has been teaching at St. Finbar, an elementary school in Burbank, and became the girls’ basketball coach at Providence in December.

Saraceno, a part-time teacher at the Burbank campus last year, coached while still holding a part-time job off campus during his first year at Providence. He wanted to coach Providence this year and continue to work as an assistant film editor at World Vision Enterprises, Inc.

“We wanted an experienced and strong coach who would be available,” said sister Lucille Dean, Providence’s principal. “For continuity in the program and for its structure, it didn’t seem he was right for our team.”

Saraceno has coached local American Legion baseball teams for the past 13 years. Three years ago, Saraceno was the pitching coach at his alma mater, Notre Dame.

Saraceno said he will work toward a teaching credential this summer so he can become a full-time teacher and coach.
