Boys’ Athletes of the Week

Share

The Morse High School boys’ basketball team always seems ready to play when the San Diego Section playoffs begin. Nobody was more ready than Willie Davis.

Davis scored 36 points as unranked Morse routed Sweetwater, 112-50. Then he scored 26, including the game-winning basket with four seconds remaining, in a 69-67 overtime upset of second-seeded and fourth-ranked Poway.

The shot against Poway put Morse (18-9), the defending section 3-A champion, into Tuesday’s Division I semifinal against Valhalla.

SOCCER

University City’s Justin Stockman scored in the 13th minute of the second overtime to lead the Centurions to a 1-0 victory over Hilltop in the quarterfinals of the 2-A soccer championships.

Neither team was able to score through the 80-minute match, a 20-minute overtime and the first 13 minutes of the second overtime. But Stockman’s shot from just outside the penalty box ended the match.

WRESTLING

Chris Box of 1-A Clairemont scored early and held on for a victory over Marc Pease of 3-A Poway in the 248-pound final of the Masters Tournament. Box improved his record to 38-1 and advanced to the state tournament.

The Masters Tournament features the top wrestlers from the 1-A, 2-A and 3-A championships. Box is from Clairemont, the small school champion. Poway won the 3-A and Masters meets.

Box scored two points on a takedown early in the first period, then held on to beat Pease. He was named wrestler of the meet.
