Division V Girls’ Basketball Playoffs : Country Day Presses Into a Berth in Final

Gifts are nice, especially if they come in the form of a ticket to the San Diego Section Division V girls’ basketball final.

La Jolla Country Day was the recipient of a Bishop’s third-quarter gift of 10 turnovers, turning a close game into a rout at La Jolla Country Day.

Country Day (19-4) won, 48-29, allowing Bishop’s only 11 points in the second half. The Torres will play the winner of tonight’s Calvin Christian-Lutheran game in the Division V championship game Saturday night at Serra High.

La Jolla Country Day led by just three entering the third quarter, when Coach Jack Wigley, whose team played half-court man-to-man defense through the first half, installed a full-court trapping zone. The press forced Bishop’s (9-9) into ballhandling mistakes and hurried, wild passes. Bishop’s turned the ball over on seven of its first nine third-quarter possessions.

“I was waiting to start pressing them,” Wigley said. “I think it changed the complexion of the game. It gets the girls going.”

The Torres started off slow, trailing by 10-4 after five minutes and 14-9 a minute into the second quarter. That’s when junior Robin Chatman got going; she scored 8 of her 15 points in a 12-4 La Jolla Country Day streak that made it 21-18 at half.

Karyn Schell added 10 points and 4 rebounds for the Torres.
