College Spring Sports : Three Northridge Pitchers Combine for Shutout Sweep

Senior Lisa Martin tossed a two-hitter and Delanee Anderson and Debbie Dickmann combined for a shutout to lead Cal State Northridge to a 2-0, 1-0 sweep over visiting San Jose State in a nonconference softball doubleheader Thursday at Matador Field.

In the first game, Martin struck out nine and allowed one walk despite playing with a bruised sternum.

Beth Onestinghel, who holds the single-season record for triples, hit another, her 12th, to knock in both runs in the first game.

In the second game, Anderson allowed eight hits before Dickmann relieved in the sixth as Northridge (32-9) improved its winning streak to 21 consecutive games.

Martin’s bunt single in the third inning scored Reggie Lyons for the winning run in the second game. Lyons walked and advanced to third on Lesley Plank’s single and an infield out.

BASEBALL

Canyons 8, Merced 4--The Cougars scored scored three unearned runs in bottom of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie in the second round of the Hancock tournament. The victory was the 16th in a row for Canyons (19-3).

After Billy Picketts and Ray Palagyi walked to open the seventh, Chris Joy drove in the winning run with a single. Mike Bible reached base on an error to load the bases and John Glenn walked to drive in another. After Ernie Perez flied to center field, Don Pederson and Pete Washington walked to force in the final two runs.

Joy, a redshirt freshman from Saugus High, was 4 for 4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Tim Nedin (8-0) went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing nine hits.

TRACK

Rudy Huber of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored 3,541 points to take the first-day lead in the Northridge Invitational decathlon at CSUN.

Huber, who had the best marks of the competition in the long jump (22-10 3/4) and 400 meters (50.26), leads Pat Shaughnessy of Azusa Pacific (3,508) by 33 points.

Northridge freshmen Sean Rapp (3,245) and Dave Swanson (3,189), competing in their first decathlon, were in fourth and seventh place, respectively, after the first five events.

Elaine Bergman, competing unattached, led the heptathlon competition with 3,219 points.
