Jay Berger of Plantation, Fla., who at 21 is representing the United States for the first time in Davis Cup play, will meet Pablo Arraya of Peru in today’s opening singles match of the American Zone semifinal at Lima, Peru.

Another Davis Cup rookie, 17-year-old Andre Agassi of Las Vegas, will play Jaime Yzaga in the second singles match. Americans Ken Flach and Robert Seguso, undefeated in Davis Cup doubles competition, are scheduled to face Yzaga and Carlos DiLaura on Saturday.

The best-of-five zone semifinal ends Sunday with Berger playing Yzaga and Agassi meeting Arraya. The U.S.-Peru winner will meet either Argentina or Ecuador in the American Zone final July 22-24 for the right to return to the 16-nation World Group in 1989. This is the first time the United States has been relegated to zone competition since this particular format was instituted in 1981.
